Please can someone tell me how to disconnect from the network.

My laptop is slowing down and overheating.

If connecting to the network is making your laptop slow down and overheat it may be a good idea to get it checked out. Even an old and underpowered one shouldn't act that way. I wouldn't leave it unattended.
