Does the Airnav receiver pick up ground based transmitters?

I tried to search for the answer for this, sorry if I missed it.

I know the Airnav receiver pick up the ABS-D from other aircraft, but is it capable of picking up ground based transmitters that are broadcasting TIS data?

Yes. If they within line of sight it will display them.

TIS-B transmits on the same frequency as Mode S downlinks (1090MHz) so RadarBox will certainly pick up those transmissions - but does it decode them ?

AFAIK, both RadarBox and SBS currently only decode 6 of the ICAO downlink formats (DF4, 5, 11, 17, 20 & 21), whereas TIS-B uses DF18, so I don't think we'll see anything on our screens.

Thanks guys for the quick replies. I guess since the signals are line of sight there is not any need to decode them... unless you were in an airplane. I was thinking of cobbling up a portable system to try it out in the plane. I heard that they did away with the five minute lag, is that true?

What would be the use of ground vehicles just having Mode-S?

When I had the network I regularly saw fire engines at Dublin Airport and ground vehicles at Luton and Stansted being picked up by other users.

Do you mean why just have Mode S and not ADS-B ?

Many airports nowadays have Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control Systems (A-SMGCS) which are hybrids using ground radar, ADS-B and Multilateration.

A vehicle which only has Mode S can still have its position MLat-ed, and fitting only a Mode S transponder is presumably cheaper than a full ADS-B fit.

I think I need to clarify what I mean by a ground based transmitter. I am referring to the ads-b transmitters that transmit TIS-B from existing ground based radar to airplanes. This allows you to see non abs-d equipped airplanes by sending the primary (skin paint) and secondary surveillance radar data.

Where I live on the Gulf of Mexico the FAA just installed a complete network of the ground based transmitters.
