ADS-B Discussed on Discovery Documentary (UPS Delivery)

The other day I watched a very interesting documentary on Dicovery Channel about UPS and its Worldport HUB.

Its enormous, bigger than the adjacent Louisville International Airport's passenger terminal, and an upcoming $1 billion expansion will make it even bigger.

The amount of airtraffic in and out of this aiport each day is crazy, and so there was a 5 minute discussion about how they use state of the art ADS-B technology to keep a track of their aircraft and to minimise the chance of collision.


Worth watching, I think its part of the Dicovery Channels 'Mega Factories' series.

Hmm, id say its a 15 minute version of what I saw which was on for a full hour, and was purely about the UPS system, nothing else like coal mining etc.

Random thought here, but there is a USB port in the back of a Sky+ box - does that enable you to transfer what recordings you have in your planner, to a PC?

Aren't you confusing ADS-B with TCAS ?  Aircraft without ADS-B are at no more risk of colliding than aircraft with.

Random thought here, but there is a USB port in the back of a Sky+ box - does that enable you to transfer what recordings you have in your planner, to a PC?

Hi Bailey, in response to what you asked above, there is a usb port on the back on my Sky + box, however when you plug anything into it nothing happens. According to Sky  this is for future developments with the Sky + feature.

Shame though as this would be handy.

Steve - Ah yeh thats a shame, as I have it on my Sky+ box now saved, and could of uploaded it somehow!

If you have a DVD recorder connected to your Sky+ box, you can Copy the program to DVD.  Then you would need to put the DVD into you PC and "rip" it to get a movie file. Then you would have to compress this to make it a reasonable size to upload it.

It can be done, but it depends how long you've got :-)

Another good program to watch will be "Britain from Above" starting on Sunday 10 August at 2100 on BBC One.  There is currently a link to the trailer on the BBC News Website front page - it's actually in the Technology section if the link has gone.

This program uses RadarBox Network XML data to show the flow of air traffic.  Hopefully, it won't be one of those "blink and you miss it" type bits!

No argument there - it was just the original statement about ADS-B being used "to minimise the chance of a collision" that sounded rather odd.
