User-generated RadarBox Location Map

This is the format used by the kml file - note the "back to front" co-ordinates

Bear in mind that you might want to add an "approximation" to your location rather than showing exactly where you are.  Google Earth shows exceptional detail in places.

In theory, we can do this to our current network map.

1.) Plot position of customer based on the there town/city, country location. (Mark as Blue Marker)
2.) If no details above entered we can use the method used at the moment from IP to Geo location (Mark as Red Marker)

Does that sound helpfull or not? Of course this relies that the town/city entered is correct and not vague.

The Town location sounds good to me.  It's probably not worth bothering with the IP location as this has proved to be somewhat inaccurate.

Airnav, I definately prefer the idea of using the customers town/city/country.  I used http://www.batchgeocode.com/ last time to convert these to map coordinates.

We had a quick go in the last hour

The blues shows the IP locations and Red is from Town, Country looked up from Google.

Problem is google maps is having trouble finding locations for a lot of them and also it seems to ignore requests to look up sometimes which means it shows as all blue markers.

Now with 150 mile range ring to show approximate coverage.  Tarbat's automated kml production is the way ahead here, as entering these points manually would soon become unmanageable.

Discovered that you can host maps on http://www.batchgeocode.com/ as well.

Using the Airnav locations file from November last year, gives the following map:

Looks similar to the one we created yesterday showing the geocoding, its seems to be working well today with most being looked up from there town and country.

We can make it look nicer by changing the markers so they are smaller?
Do you want this method to be put on the 2 main network views which are linked on the website?

As you say, your map seems to be working better now, it even reacted to me starting to share again and put my real location (Portmahomack) on the map.

Yes, make the markers smaller would be my preference.

Looks excellent!!!   I just hope that working on this map isn't delaying the work on v2.1 ;)

Ok we have updated the 2 pages on the main site to have it look up via town and country as well as the IP.

As the look up is too google it takes a few seconds longer for the positions to appear on the map and also sometimes it may only show IP positions if google is busy.
