British Coverage

Has anyone any idea as to how much of UK is covered by ANRB network especially Scotland and northern isles. As I live in Shetland I'd be hoping to be able to track aircraft up through Scotland. I have looked for coverage map but been unable to find anything as yet.

try this page  http://www.airnavsystems.com/RadarBox/network2.php  But remember, most will not be online as there is nothing at the moment to share.  Once flying starts again check that page and you'll find good coverage.  There is an option on that page to turn on "reception circles" but I find these to block out the map, be better if they were something like 50% transparent.

I'm afraid that map isn't very useful for the UK at the moment, as only RadarBoxes which are sending data to the network are shown - as noboduy in the UK is receiving live aircraft at the momenyt, there aren't any pins there!

Sandy - The general UK coverage is fine, but the lower levels of the west of Scotland aren't well covered, and I think we've only got two users north of Aberdeen - Tarbat in  Portmahomack, Ross-shire, and Orkney in, er, well you can work that one out!

A new box in the Shetlands will be very welcome to fill some gaps.

There are actually 2 users in Orkney that we know about. There is us and smcm too.  We get very good coverage up to near the Faroes so you should get further and it would be fine to get some of the network holes filled.

From the Tarbat Peninsular I get pretty good coverage from the central belt, up through the highlands, and out as far as Orkney and the Western Isles.  Shetland is just beyond my range, so would be most welcome.

There also regular coverage from an Aberdeen user which gives good coverage of the approaches into Aberdeen and the helicopters serving the north sea oil rigs.

Note that the Airnav coverage web page often shows the location of the users IP address, not their actual physical location.

Assuming we get a bit more aircraft activity tomorrow, I'lll post a screenshot of Scotland coverage.

Thanks for all that info guys, that explains when I tried the coverage map there was nothing showing. Never thought about everyone having their boxes switched off.

tarbat, thanks for the offer of the screenshot, then while I was replying to post you uploaded the screenshot. Absolutely brilliant, this is a fascinating hobby and I can see it becoming quite addictive. I suppose Shetland is the last outpost right enough so it will be interesting to see what coverage I can get. Probably need to experiment with antenna siting etc as it tends to be quite hilly here but most traffic is passing over at cruise altitude.

It will be great when the UK airspace gets back to normal, though just heard on news ther's a new cloud drifting SE from Iceland so things may change overnight again.

As "Orkney" said I think there are just two of us in Orkney, so would be good to get more coverage from Shetland.

I have good take-off towards Shetland and west coast of Norway and can normally get coverage to abt 50nm north of Unst and close to Stavanger and Bergen areas, but don't see much west of Shetland due to local hills.
