what criteria changes the status

Just out of curiosity what criteria changes the STATUS.
I seem to get aircraft above 20000 feet that show the status as APPROACH yet others show DESCENDING

thanks for that link Tarbat but in it it says approach is aircraft descending below FL150 yet on my screen at the moment I have 2 aircraft at FL200+  that are both showing approach.
Is there a way to change the settings?
